UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Nicholas Meisel, Emmert H. Bashore Faculty Development Professor and assistant professor of engineering design and mechanical engineering, is a contributor to “Manufacturing with Additive Processes,” a chapter featured in Design for Advanced Manufacturing: Technologies and Processes, a textbook that focuses on the new processes, materials and technologies in the manufacturing industry. LaRoux Gillespie, past president of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, serves as the textbook’s editor.
Published by McGraw-Hill Education, the 624-page textbook is targeted towards manufacturing engineers and designers and includes information on current technologies and processes used in industries including: laser manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and micro manufacturing.
The chapter Meisel contributed to focuses on additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. Meisel’s specific chapter section, “Designing for Material Jetting Additive Processes,” highlights material jetting, an additive manufacturing process where inkjet printheads place droplets of liquid 3D-printing material on a surface. As material is added, it changes from liquid to solid form through its exposure to ultraviolet energy. Once a layer is deposited, the printing surface lowers by a distance equal to the thickness of one layer of 3D-printed material and another layer of material is jetted directly atop the previous layer. This process continues until the printing of the part or product is complete.
The “Designing for Material Jetting Additive Processes” section includes information on the type of machines that use material jetting additive manufacturing, the materials used to create a finished material jetting product, process variables relating to part quality and material properties, post-processing impact on design feasibility and general guidelines for material jetting.
